MAY 2018 – WALK EVERY DAY FOR A WEEK CHALLENGE – DAY 2

When I went to the Ecclesall Woods last month, the bluebells were just emerging. I decided to go again today and see them in all their glory. And what a sight! I just love these blue delicate flowers. They are so, so pretty in the ancient woodland surroundings.
About Bluebells
Hyacinthoides non-scripta (formerly Endymion non-scriptus or Scilla non-scripta) is a bulbous perennial plant, found in Atlantic areas from north-western Spain to the British Isles, and also frequently used as a garden plant. It is known in English as the common bluebell or simply bluebell, a name which is used in Scotland to refer to the harebell, Campanula rotundifolia. In spring, H. non-scripta produces a nodding, one-sided inflorescence of 5–12 tubular, sweet-scented violet-blue flowers, with strongly recurved tepals, and 3–6 long, linear, basal leaves.
H. non-scripta is particularly associated with ancient woodland where it may dominate the understorey to produce carpets of violet-blue flowers in “bluebell woods”, but also occurs in more open habitats in western regions. It is protected under UK law and in some other parts of its range.

Did you know?
There is Woodland club every Wednesday from 3:45 to 5:15 pm for primary school children (£2.50) and Woodland Toddler Group Sheffield every Friday morning from 9.45 am in the woods.
My son and I have very fond memories when we were attending. All sort of activities are on their agenda including games, walks, making popcorn and marshmallows on an open fire, singing songs, looking for bugs, building dens; all in such beautiful surroundings.
I definitely felt re-energised after the walk. It is great to get outdoors, be surrounded by nature, listen to the birds, enjoy the colours of spring, have a think and just relax.
