LEA GARDENS – A HIDDEN GEM
Lea gardens near Matlock, Derbyshire really is a hidden gem and so not many people know about this stunning, colourful place. I absolutely love it. I try and go every year at least once.
Last year I went with the boys, but this time it was only me. I had a very relaxing morning! ;-).
It takes about 45 mins by car to get there from Sheffield. Check out my other outings near Sheffield here.
I took the route via the Peaks as opposed to route via Chesterfield. It was a very pleasant drive in a glorious sunshine through the beauty of the Peak District, the road sides were covered in bright yellow dandelions in bloom. I love dandelions, they are actually very pretty flowers. Who says they are a weed?
About the Garden
Founded in 1935 by John Marsden-Smedley, the garden has a rare collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and alpines that have been introduced from the far corners of the world. It is the site of a medieval millstone quarry and covers about 4 acres (1.6 ha) on a wooded hillside. The excellent rock gardens contain a huge variety of alpines with acers, dwarf conifers, heathers and spring bulbs.
The gardens are best to visit between second half of April and May. Adult day ticket is £5, reduced to £2.50 in July. Children pay 50p. A season ticket for £9 including free admission for kids is also available.
There is also a popular teashop with a very good selection of cakes also serving breakfasts, lunches and snacks. Grab a seat outside the teashop and enjoy the beautiful views.
The nursery offers a large number and variety of plants for sale such as rhododendrons, azaleas, and alpines at reasonable prices. Plants can be purchased throughout the year, even out of season when the Gardens and Teashop are closed.
Amazing place to unwind and relax.
Perfect place for some painting.
The gardens are perfect for kids who can run around in between the flowers, in the woodland or have a play in the castle play house below. The gardens are also a great place for taking amazing photos of your kids amongst the rhododendrons!
It is such a beautiful place and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes flowers, plants, colourful displays, birds singing and having a tea and cake in such a tranquil setting. I am going to visit the gardens again in a few weeks in celebration of my friend’s big birthday. And I am planning on showing this wonderful spot to my mum and my sister.
