MID WALES NATURE

A DAY IN GILFACH NATURE RESERVE, MID WALES

We visited Gilfach Nature Reserve ( Radnorshire Wildlife Trust) in Powys, Mid Wales in October last year. What a beautiful place.

Gilfach Nature Reserve

Gilfach Nature Reserve is set in the heart of the Marteg Valley in the Cambrian Mountains. It is about 4 miles north of Rhayader.

Gilfach is special because of its wide variety of habitats within a small area such as open moorland, flower-rich grassland, oak woodland and rocky upland rivers.

Undoutably the reserve is a great place to go for a family ramble even in wet weather.  Don’t forget to take a picnic with you.

The awesome 200-acre site has more than its fair share of birds. Keep an eye out for the Dipper, the Pied Flycatcher and the Red Kite. Moreover, you might spot a leaping salmon in November too!

Nature Discovery Centre

The traditional barns have long been restored into a Nature Discovery Centre with helpful information points and exhibitions all about the reserve. The byre attached to the longhouse and accessible toilets is open all year for visitors.  There are also picnic benches too. The centre is generally open in the summer holidays and sometimes in the week and weekends.

As you can see there was no one in sight and we didn’t meet a single person for half a day there. We had all this vast, beautiful place for ourselves. 🙂

We go to Wales quite often and I absolutely love Wales as you can probably see from my previous posts

Gilfach Nature Reserve

While in the Gilfach Nature Reserve, choose a walk from a vast network of signposted walking trails, some of which are suitable for wheelchairs or buggies. You won’t be disappointed, the views are just spectacular.

In short, the Gilfach Nature Reserve should be on your list when visiting Mid Wales. It must be beautiful in summer.
