I have finally seen the Mandarin ducks since they arrived at Longshaw! Every time I went past the Longshaw pond they were not there but today it was my lucky duck day! 🙂

The colourful one is a male. Mating season takes place in the spring. They are monogamous animals meaning that one couple mate throughout their entire life. Mandarin ducks are a symbol of fidelity and great love in China and Korea because of their mating habits.

The female builds a nest in a tree cavity. The male guards the female but does not participate in the incubation of eggs. Young ducks will discover water soon after the hatching. Mother will call them from the ground to jump down and follow her to the nearest body of water. Although they land from the high trees (sometimes 30 feet from the ground) the ducklings do not get injured from the fall.

What a peaceful and beautiful place to do some art. Just lovely.
